To complete this membership application, you may be required to submit copies of supporting documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, military service records, or other identification verifying your relationship to a qualifying Vietnam War veteran. Please have these documents available before submitting your application.

Step 1. Qualifying Veteran: identify the Vietnam Veteran to be entered into the genealogical records of the Sons & Daughters of the Vietnam War.

A qualifying veteran is a man or woman who served in a branch of the United States Armed Forces, including the United States Army, United States Army Air Force, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, United States Coast Guard, United States Merchant Marine, or the South Vietnamese ARVN, at any time between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of service location.


Please include a copy or digital image of a photograph of the qualifying veteran if one is available. Do not send an original print, as photographs will not be returned.


Proof of service dates is mandatory and may be provided using a Report of Separation (DD-214) or other official documentation, such as military service records, Veterans Administration paperwork, or pension records.

A Lineal Member (proceed to Step 2) is defined as an individual who can provide verification of direct lineal descent—through birth or adoption—from a qualifying Vietnam War veteran. This includes relationships such as mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, or other direct ancestors.
A Collateral Member (proceed to Step 3) is defined as an individual who can provide verification of a collateral relationship—such as aunt, uncle, brother, sister, or similar—with a qualified Vietnam War veteran. For the purposes of the Sons & Daughters of the Vietnam War Veterans, relationships through marriage and adoption are accepted as qualifying relationships.
A Friend (proceed to Step 4) is defined as an individual annual membership for those who do not have a relative who served during the Vietnam War but wish to support and participate in the activities of the Sons & Daughters of the Vietnam War.
A Veteran (Proceed to Step 5) is defined as an individual who served at any time during the period from 1 November 1955 to 15 May 1975 not dependent on service location during Vietnam.
